The Bowie Lady Rabbits made it back to the playoffs for the first time in four years, knocking off the eighth ranked team in the state in the process. Bowie lost in their regional quarterfinal game against 9th ranked Wall on Tuesday but thanks to their upset victory against Brady, The Bowie lady rabbits are our team of the week.
It's been four years since the Bowie girls basketball team made it to the state playoffs, eventually falling to Brock in the state semi final game, and even though the seniors on this years Bowie team were just eighth graders then, senior Madison Davis says they knew it was their goal to get back to state. "They were definitely a good inspiration for us. They push through a lot and they were the first playoff team Bowie had in a while. I think they give us motivation to push to beat them."
Bowie made it through Distcict this season with only one loss, and their real test came against 8th ranked Brady. A test they passed with flying colors. Knocking off a ranked team in the playoffs with a 51-46 win. Coach Shelby Pastusek says it was all about playing their game, "I think the biggest thing that we did in the game was like i told the kids, we play like we practice every day. There's been times this season where we haven't been able to put four quarters together and against brady and against brady we put four quarters together."
Emily gilbert, one of Bowie's go to seniors, was asked to shut down Brady's leading scorer, "I just did everything in my power so she wouldn't score. At halftime i actually thought she hit every thing she shot. I asked coach what i needed to do and she said i was doing good. So i said Ok and kept on playing."
Senior Laken Demoss says Bowie went into the game with Brady with a mindset they had been driving home all week. That rankings are just a number, "we realized it was a big game but we never talked about rankings or anything like that i guess. I guess we just really didn't care. We just wanted to win. That's all we really talked about."
A bright spot all season for the Lady Rabitts on both sides of the ball has been freshman guard Courtney Brady, "It's kind of a lot of pressure on you sometimes, but i just have to work through it because i know i always have really great teammates that are always there for me so that helps a lot too."
One of the strongest leaders on the court for this year's Lady Rabbit team has been senior Madison Swain, Who said it was a combination of nerves and excitement before their game against Brady, "It was kind of both, we couldn't get nervous because it was a big game. We had to play it just like it was any other game."
And even though Bowie's season came to an end this week, the Lady Rabbits can still walk away from this season knowing they made it back to the playoffs, and upset a ranked opponent in a tough playoff environment.
