Since becoming a 6-man program in 2004, the Throckmorton Greyhounds have only lost 14 games.
One of them came Friday night when Crowell went to Throckmorton to beat the top-ranked team in the state, snapping an 18-game win streak. It was Crowell's first win over Throckmorton since 1991, when both teams sported 11-man programs. The Wildcats will sport a new plaque in Crowell very soon, grabbing our honor as team of the week.
The Throckmorton Greyhounds began playing six-man football in 2004.
Up until Friday night they had gone 37-0 against Texoma teams.
"That's their golden ticket. We came up and played the run well too," said linebacker Will Hogan. "We got the job done on the defensive side. Coaches were real happy with that."
Indeed the coaches were happy when the final seconds ticked off, but it didn't take long for them to put the win in perspective.
"Last year we had one early-on we let be the biggest one of the year," said Head Coach Nathan Hayes. "If everything works out we may see Throckmorton again. They're going to be ready for us a second-time. Don't let this be the biggest game of the year and keep our focus."
"It's going to be huge," says running back Daniel Clark. "We have to stay equal. We can't be up here on the high-level. We have to stay equal. We have to get on the ball next time we get to the game."
