Thornberry Comments on President's Plan for Immigration Reform

Thirteenth District Congressman Mac Thornberry says illegal immigrants should be sent back to their home countries as soon as they cross the US border.
Thirteenth District Congressman Mac Thornberry says the president himself is partly to blame for the immigration problems.

Thornberry says the best thing our government can do is send illegal immigrants back home immediately.

He says the United States has to make it clear that children or anybody else who comes to this country illegally cannot stay, but he says the president's comments on immigration thus far have not sent that message to people in other countries.

"He announced that he was not going to send back individuals who come here as children if they haven't broken the law," Thornberry says. "What they heard in Central America was, 'If you're a child, you can go to the United States and stay and then your family can follow you."

Right now there are more than 1100 children in the Unaccompanied Alien Children's Program's temporary shelter at Fort Sill.

Officials say so far, nearly 300 children have been discharged from that program.
