Thousands of folks from across Texoma made their way to Sheppard Air Force Base on Friday evening to celebrate 4th of July at Freedom Fest.

The big Independence Day event kicked off honoring some of America's bravest men and women who help keep this country safe.

Folks also enjoyed many of the event's attractions including live music, a kids area, food and vendors.

Many want to remind the community today is more than just a holiday.

Lieutenant Colonel for the 82nd Force Support Squadron at Sheppard Joseph Chargualam says, "For us to be able to get together is not only about having the BBQs, coming out here listening to the great music and the bands but also to think back on all the people that have sacrificed a lot to make sure we have these types of freedoms."

Also, Texomans like James Breidenbach says, "It's just an awesome day to celebrate the great nation we live in with all the freedoms we have and just everything we have today."

Freedom Fest's fireworks display will start at 10 p.m.

The show is expected to last about 20 minutes.

If you plan to attend, SAFB officials urge you to use the Missile Road gate entrance.

They say large bags, cooler and alcohol are not allowed on base.
