Throckmorton Celebrates Crowning of County Courthouse

The Throckmorton County Courthouse is one step closer to reopening.

On Thursday, Throckmorton residents celebrated as the building's restoration reached a high point.

The Throckmorton County Courthouse was built in 1890 and is half way through a $3 million dollar restoration project.

The original cupola was removed 75 years ago but they're ready to install the new one.

Trent McKnight, Throckmorton County historical chairman, says the cupola is the centerpiece of the community.

He says its installation will ignite the downtown area with pride.

The 28 foot spire is one of the last pieces of the project.

"So what's really cool about this restoration project with the courthouse is that it's also been the first domino to fall in several different restoration projects in our community," McKnight says.

Also, Texas' First Lady Anita Perry was on hand for the celebration.

She met with Throckmorton residents and toured the courthouse.

She says the restoration project should inspire other small communities.

Perry says, "I love this part of the state and obviously it's my home so it's always thrilling to come back and play who do you know and where'd you grow up. I love it. I'm so proud of Throckmorton and what they've done with the courthouse and the restoration."

Throckmorton residents like Donnell Brown says restoring the courthouse to its old glory is a gift to future generations.

"I just think it brings a lot of people to our community and to our citizens as we really strive to make our community a place where people what to not only come and visit but a place where people want to come and live.

The cupola will be installed on Friday and the restoration of the county courthouse is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
