Two people are dead after a plane crash on Friday afternoon about six miles northwest of Bowie.

Department of Public Safety Sergeant Mark Helton says the 1974 twin-engine Cessna 414 crashed around 3:40 p.m. near Lone Star Road off Highway 59 on a family's private property about a mile north of Bowie Municipal Airport.

Helton says the plane was destroyed by fire following the crash.

DPS Trooper Tony Fulton identified 51-year-old Lawrence Liptack and his 10-year-old son, Landon, both out of Manvel near Houston, as the victims.

Helton says Federal Aviation Administration officials will arrive at the scene on Saturday to investigate the cause of the crash.

He says they are trying to determine if the plane was taking off or landing but they suspect the plane was approaching the airport.

FAA officials say the plane had recently been registered on Aug 1.
