TxDOT to Move Kell West Freeway Exit

The danger zone TxDOT crews will soon address is the Fairway exit ramp off Kell West, which is also known as U.S. Highway 82.

it's a congested area that will soon become much safer thanks to a TxDOT construction project.

Many motorists who take the Fairway exit off Kell West know they could be driving into trouble.

"It's real dangerous, especially if you're coming off the exit and if you want to come this way...it's real hard to come all the way over," says motorists, Angie Tucker.

But driving all the way over is what motorists did for years to get into the parking lot of United Market Street.

So TxDOT took action.

Last year, crews installed delineators to stop the illegal 90 degree turns from the frontage road.

Now, TxDOT is planning to put the brakes on the driving dangers here by building a new exit ramp.

"This will improve safety at the Fairway exit. If we move it back 500 feet, this will give a lot more time for people to merge across the three lanes and go northbound on Fairway or enter the United parking lot if they want to," says TxDOT Spokesperson Adele Lewis.

It's a plan that has some drivers applauding.

"It probably would be better. Much better I think," says motorist, Helen Hardin.

"I think that would be better and safer for everybody. It will be a good thing and I can get off the highway if I want to," continues Tucker.

And officials say decreasing danger here will not increase any major delays for driver.

"The real good part about this job is that we will build the new off ramp while every continues to use the old off ramp for now, then when we're ready we'll switch traffic to the new off ramp and demolish the old one," explains Lewis.

Construction will start next week on the new ramp.

It will cost about $600 thousand to build, take about 4 months to finish and require some occasional lane closures.
