Dirty dishes and a pile of laundry.

It's not Sarah Reine ideal way to live. But it's her way of conserving.

"Every couple of days we are doing dishes which is not something I'd prefer, I'd rather do them everyday but it's just to help save the water and we haven't been doing our laundry as much just once a week," she said.

And if you step outside, you'll see more evidence of conservation efforts.

"My grass is usually green and nice and cut good but if you can't water it you can't take care of it," said Chris Zamora, who is conserving water.

These efforts to save water in Vernon are only voluntary, but soon city officials say that could change.

"If we don't get rain sometime soon, we will probably be looking at stage three, said Vernon City Manager, Mitch Grant.

Stage three restrictions would limit resident's water use to certain times of the day and those who disobey will be fined.

But for Reines, it's not about what stage the city is in but the idea of a drought alone.

"I am very concerned. I am very concerned I mean if we don't get water to fill up our lakes and rivers and things like that for us to be able to get water to filter through we won't have anymore water," she said.

Vernon city officials say they are not certain just when they'll hit stage three water restrictions, but before that they plan to incorporate an alternating irrigation schedule using an even and odd address system.
