Wichita Falls' Habitat For Humanity Participates in Youth United Build

The Wichita Falls branch of Habitat for Humanity participates in the Youth United Build for the first time.
In just a few weeks a family in need will have a brand new home.

It's all thanks to this weekend's very first Habitat for Humanity Youth Build in Wichita Falls.

Two thousand hours is how long it takes to build a house and how many hours volunteers spend donating their time to give families in need a place to call home.

"They're not necessarily poor, but they're struggling. They're working as hard as they can and we're gonna help them get over the hump," Chris De La Garza with Habitat for Humanity says.

There's a new way the local chapter is doing that.

It's through their youth united build, which kicked off Saturday. Youth ages 16 through 25 are teaming up this summer to help a Wichita Falls family in need.

"It's to encourage leadership. They spent the school year raising the money. They raised a total of 45,000 to pay for this house," De La Garza says.

After a few weeks of work these volunteers will be able to say they helped provide this family with a home.

And that's why they and Habitat employees say they enjoy doing what they do.

"I know whenever I drive down the street, that I helped build that house," Habitat Builder James Navarro.

What's unique about Habitat for Humanity is that each family is able to design their own floor plan for their future home.

That's not all that is unique about these homes.

"We write scripture on all the stubs, so each habitat house is framed in scripture," De La Garza says.

This is something builders and volunteers say not only makes their homes unique, but blesses the families in more ways than one.

"It's just such a blessing for the families to walk through their home knowing that they're covered in prayer and scripture the minute they walk through the door," De La Garza says.

And De Le Garza says it's a blessing to be able to participate in Youth United Build this year and help the youth of Wichita Falls be able to spend their time blessing others.

The teens will spend the rest of the summer working on the house and will finish by hosting a party and presenting the family their new home.
