Winners of I.D.E.A. WF 2013 Announced

After months of hard work and preparation, three winners are chosen among six local entrepreneurs in the 2013 I.D.E.A. WF competition.

Local entrepreneurs are getting their small businesses off the ground, thanks to the 2013 I.D.E.A. WF competition.

The winner of the "Expansion--GROW" category for businesses established in the last two years but have made less than $250-thousand is Keeno's Steakhouse Jerky, which recently opened an emporium on Old Jacksboro Highway.

Catherine Keeney, co-owner of the business, says, "It is amazing.  It's tender.  It's flavorful.  I don't like jerky, but I love our jerky."

Gary Keeney, co-owner for Keeno's Steakhouse Jerky, says, "It's soft and easy to chew like a steak.  It's not that shoe leather you get everywhere else."

"We have four signature flavors from hot to mild.  My favorite is salsa, it's kind of in between," Catherine says.  "We also have 30 types of exotic jerkys from rabbit to alligator."

They say the best part of their business is helping others: 10-percent of their profits go to charity.

They've already helped Straight Street Ministries buy a laptop for kids to use and now they're raising money to send kids from Fairway Baptist Church to summer camp.

The business will soon expand.

"We're already planning a second store," Gary says.  "It's going to be a couple hours from here.  We're going to resort like small towns from here to the hill country then to the Texas coast."

The winner of the "Start Up---GO" portion of the competition is Night Logos.

Tony Coursat, owner of Night Logos, says, "My idea is a receiver hitch taillight.  It will fit on the back of pickups and SUVs.  The light will shine the name of your school or business out the back as a taillight and on the ground you'll see the logo of your company or your school."

Night Logos is now getting off the ground.

"There's a large tooling cost to be able to make this product at a price point where we can offer it to the public where it's affordable," Coursat says.

He says now that he's won the competition, he'll get the tooling underway, so football fans won't be disappointed.

"We can ramp up and start assembling and get these products out there for football season," Coursat says.

Two Sisters Bakery, a company that makes homemade dog biscuits, won the judge's choice award for this year's competition.

The winners were each awarded a share of more than $66-thousand in cash and in-kind services.
