Downtown Proud is making a re-investment into Downtown Wichita Falls.
The organization has purchased a building at 8th and Ohio. It was built in 1915, and has housed two banks, a pool hall and the very first Zales Jewelery Store. The Defoor's purchased the building in 1980 and operated a pawn shop until March of 2012.
Downtown proud plans to renovate the building, and bring back to its original glory, but organizers say that's just the beginning.
DWFD Executive Director says, “This is not a one time project for this. Within this 1200 square feet we have the possibility of two or three store fronts.”
Organizers hope to bring in an arts center to the historic depot area to help attract future development. The organization is planning to clean out the building this Fall. Restoration and construction work is scheduled will get started after that. Officials say once the work is done they will start looking for businesses to fill the renovated space.
