MPEC Gears Up For A Busy And Successful 2014

The MPEC hosted two of their biggest events of the new year this past weekend. While hosting events for the entertainment hub is nothing new, MPEC officials are doing what they can to make sure 2014 is a successful one.

This weekend's Bridal Market was one of hundreds of events the MPEC will hold this year.

MPEC Director Bob Sullivan says it is extremely important for the community to get out and support these types of events to help keep the event center in the black.

Sullivan says 2014 will be a great year for the city's entertainment facility.

He says there will be lots of reoccurring community events plus new ones like Bulls, Bands and Barrels featuring Kevin Fowler.

Sullivan says it's a great way to kickstart the new year.

"Whether they're big or small, it's a good thing," Sullivan says. "Certainly if you do the bigger names, there's more great name recognition then you will for local community events. But any part of what our success is that we're a community resource."

Sullivan says the MPEC holds around 500 events every year but that up to 40% of them are held during the first three months of the year.

He says a strong start is crucial for a successful year especially since historically Wichita Falls is a tough market for ticket sales.

"It's our largest issue and I think it's an issue that most performing arts agencies in the community face. We all struggle to get people to spend their money to come down and see an event," Sullivan says.

He says last year they barely missed their budget goals.

"We're a little bit below our budget expectations in terms of our revenue. We were right on target with our budget estimates for expenses. It's just a matter of generating more revenue and that's generated by more people coming to events," Sullivan says.

He says many of their tickets are sold on the day events are held so its hard to tell how successful they are until they take place.
