Organizations Help Texomans Stay Warm

Folks at homeless shelters are bracing for the cold.
For those without family or friends to take them in, there are places they can turn.

Faith Mission says they are already providing for more people right now, but they will never turn anyone away. So if you do need a place to stay and all beds are full, they'll still make room.

“We can always make room for more. If we don't have beds available we can put mats down on the floor. We have had people stay in the chapel before and sleep on the pews. We have family rooms available right now,” says Faith Mission's Executive Director Steve Sparks.

Sparks says they don't want to leave anyone on the streets with the low temperatures. He says even if you have been barred from the shelter before they will find a way to work with you.

“We'll sit down with those people if they need us to and we will renegotiate that for the time being just to make sure that nobody stays out in the cold,” says Sparks.

And the increase of people seeking shelter means they need more help.

“We're having to cook more food, we're having to use more volunteers, we're calling in more volunteers to help us with the serving of the food and we are just putting mats down on the floor when we need to,” says Sparks.

That warm meal is something one woman is very thankful to have.

“It is very nice just to know, there is caring people out here that will try and help you as much as they can,” says Faith Mission Client Minga Diaz.

But what if you have a place to stay, but you can't afford to keep it warm? Another organization is there to help as well.

“Everybody wants a warm home and everybody wants a warm place to stay and nobody needs to be out in this cold and so we're here to help,” says Executive Director of Interfaith Ministries, Chad Crowley.

Interfaith Ministries will help pay to heat your house...All you need is your id, social security card and disconnect letter.

Both organizations hope if you or someone you know needs help, you will turn to them.

Both organizations do provide many other services.
