Team of the Week October 10th, 2013: Iowa Park Football

The Iowa Park Hawks moved to 4-2 this weekend. They are our KFDX team of the week.
With more than half of the football regular season in the books, the Iowa Park Hawks have already won twice as many games as they did the last two years combined. And with their new stadium still under construction the Hawks still have yet to play a true home game. But thanks to a gritty win at Memorial Stadium against Amarillo River Road this weekend, the Hawks are our team of the week.

Here's what head coach Scott ponder had to say to his team after the win, "hey great job. We were challenged and we were in a tough situation a lot of ball clubs could not have pulled together and won that game. We came down we rallied and got things going. Now going into the open date we get a week off we got to re vamp some things, shuffle some things around and find the right combination for us. We have a couple injuries we have to fix. Come ready to work next week. We got an open day to try and get our batteries recharged. The real season  starts when we go down to play the graham steers. They have one of the best teams in the state and we're going to give them everything we've got. I'm proud of you. Im proud of you Jesse Villalobos for stepping up at the half. Great job lets go hawks on three...1...2...3...Hawks."

After a rough first half. With the hawks clinging to a three point lead. Iowa park center Jesse Villalobos decided enough was enough. So he stood up in the locker room at halftime and talked to his team. "i stood up and i just got my team rallied. I talked to them about how they're my team and how i would play for them and no one else. And how we need to come together and win this game for us."

And that's exactly what the Hawks did. Kelly Houston scoring twice after halftime on a 22-yard run and a 53-yard pass from ponder. He finished with 58 rushing yards and 73 receiving yards. And Iowa park getting to 4 and 2 heading into their bye week. Villalobos was asked after the game if this was a signature win for the hawks..."in a way yes sir i do think it's a signature win for us. But i think the next signature win will be a district win. We still need to fight. This was a great win tonight. But i think it's going to be more worth it when we get to district two weeks from now against the graham steers."

And with injuries to a couple key players the bye week comes at the right time for the Hawks. Who's district schedule starts with the undefeated Graham Steers. Before finishing up with Hirschi, Burk and Vernon.
