Team of the Week, September 12th, 2013: Hirschi Huskies Football

Our team of the week for September 12th, 2013 is the Hirschi Huskies football team.
Coming in to their game against Mineral Wells, Hirschi head coach Cody Slater said even though Graham had taken down the rams by a score of 51-to-7, the Huskies weren't taking their week two match up lightly. Slater saying that the steers were firing on all cylinders the week before.

Slater also said the key was to come out of the gates and strike fast. Which is just what the Huskies did on the way to their biggest win in 47 years, "great attitude and great effort tonight. I'm super proud of that. Great job with attitude and effort. That's what it takes. Remember what we talked about. How do we handle success from here on out. You're 2-and-0. That doesn't mean anything. You can be 2-and-8. Or you can still be 10-and-0."

Even from the outside looking in, this is a different Hirschi Huskies team than we're all used to, and the Huskies are as confident as ever after a 68 point win on Friday. The second biggest blowout in program history, "the kids are believing right now. I couldn't be more excited of the kids attitude and effort right now. Just working hard every day. They're ready to get to work tomorrow morning."

The most impressive performance of the night was turned in by our athlete of the week, Cedric Battle, who rushed for five touchdowns on the night, including an impressive 75 yard punt return. Coach Slater saying it's all about experience, "I felt like coming into this year he was going to be better than he was last year because he was only a sophomore and now he's a junior. He sees a lot more and he's more experienced. That one year of experience has really helped out."

Battle says the game on Friday night was the most fun he's had playing football in a long time, "it's great. It's a great feeling. All the fans love it. My team loves it. It's just for the team. It's all for the team. It's a great feeling though."

And along with Battle's performance on the ground, Hirschi quarterback Terrance Cooper threw for two TD's and led the Huskies in rushing with 139 yards. Cody Slater says he has a ton of confidence in his QB, "you know, he's doing an excellent job of managing the offense. I can't be more proud of him. He did what it takes for us to win and made sure we didn't turn over the football."

And another impressive stat from Friday night. Every time the huskies touched the football, they managed to put points on the board.
