Team Of The Week: Vernon Football, November 28, 2013

Vernon Lions Football Named Team Of The Week
After two midseason losses, the Vernon Lions football team is getting things going at the right time.
Vernon is on a five game winning streak including two impressive playoff wins.
For their efforts, the Lions get our team of the week award.
The Vernon Lions started off the season with five straight wins.
Then they hit a bit of a rough patch losing two straight games.
After the losses, the Lions turned it around and won five in a row.
"The kids have buckled down and they knew what we had to do to get into the playoffs. They have done a good job we have had several injuries. The young kids have stepped up and played well. In the long run it has been a great deal for us. It has been great to watch these kids play," said Vernon coach Mark Bateman.
"It is great. After coming back from two straight losses. To step it up and working hard in practice. We have been good and have been working hard ever since," said Vernon senior Zack Perez.
One part of the team that has stepped it up is the Lions defense.
Since the two game losing streak Vernon has given up an average of 11 points a game.
That's down from the 18 points a game the Lions were giving up the first seven games of the season.
"We have been working hard on our defense because we know they were going to run hard. So had our linebackers ready to go so we can stop the run," said Perez.
"Our offense has done pretty well over the year. We have had some play makers make some plays on offense now our defense are stepping up and are doing a great job," said Bateman.
With the clock ticking for their showdown with Shallowater Saturday, Coach Bateman is proud of the turnaround of the Lions football program.
"I would like to take credit for the turnaround. But I have a great set of coaches. We have a great bunch of kids. They have done all of the work. They have done everything they could to turn this thing around. And i just got to go along for the ride. And it is fun to be here," said Bateman.
If the Lions can get four more wins, there will be more fun in Vernon as they will win a state championship for the first time since 1990.
