"The Sound of Music" to Broadcast Live on KFDX

"The Sound of Music" is getting a live stage production tonight on NBC that harkens back to the story's roots on Broadway.
(NBC News) Nearly 50 years after its release, "The Sound of Music" remains one of the most popular movies of all time.

When you adjust ticket prices for inflation, it's also one of the biggest box office hits of all time.

Tonight, NBC presents a variation of that film classic with a live stage production, starring Carrie Underwood.

Underwood, who became the fourth "American Idol" winner at age 22, faces her biggest audition of sorts eight years later as she leads a musical high-wire act through hills that are alive on live TV.

Tonight's broadcast will mark the first "Sound of Music" production where the main tension won't be whether the Von Trapps escape Austria, but whether what's being billed as television's first live musical in more than a half-century comes off without a glitch.
