V.C. Saied's Sound Truly Displays the Spirit of Texoma

For his decades of dedication to the Mad Medics V.C. Saied, M.D. is this month's Spirit of Texoma Award winner.

DOCTOR V.C. SAIED STARTED TOOTING HIS HORN BACK IN HIGH SCHOOL...AND HE CONTINUED PLAYING ALL THE WAY THROUGH COLLEGE AND THE AIR FORCE.
FOR A SHORT TIME, READING AND PLAYING MUSIC TOOK A BACK SEAT TO READING PATIENTS' CHARTS...
UNTIL ONE DAY WHILE MAKING ROUNDS AT WICHITA GENERAL HE MET A PATIENT'S HUSBAND,  WHO SHARED HIS LOVE OF DIXIELAND MUSIC.
FROM THAT MEETING  IN THE MID SIXTIES CAME THE BAND THAT'S KEPT TOES TAPPING EVER SINCE--THE MAD MEDICS.
FOR HIS DEDICATION TO THE JAZZ ENSEMBLEDOCTOR SAIED IS THIS MONTH'S SPIRIT OF TEXOMA AWARD WINNER.

FROM THE BRIGHT LIGHTS OF MEMORIAL AUDITORIUM TO THE MOONLIGHT AT LUCY PARK THE TUNES OF THE MAD MEDICS HAVE BEEN MUSIC TO THE EARS OF AUDIENCES IN WICHITA FALLS SINCE 1965.
WHEN THE BAND IS NOT PERFORMING, YOU CAN OFTEN HEAR  SONGS COMING FROM THEIR PRACTICE HALL AT, WHERE ELSE--  NUMBER ONE BASIN STREET, A ROAD THE CITY NAMED IN THE BAND'S HONOR BACK IN THE 70'S.

We have had some just fantastic people in our band and we all get along so well and have so much fun together that we have never ever thought of quitting.  Anything you can play every Thursday night for 40 something years and not get tired of and look forward to the next time you play has to be good and that's the way we all feel.

ALL THE MAD MEDICS HAVE THE LOVE OF OLD TIME MUSIC AND NEW ORLEANS CLASSICS...AND THAT PASSION HAS PAID OFF OVER THE YEARS TO THE TUNE OF MORE THAN 90 SCHOLARSHIPS FOR STUDENTS AT MSU.

When we first started playing everybody was looking for free entertainment so we filled the bill and after a while we got too many requests so we started charging and then we started feeling guilty because we were having so much fun we didn't want the money so we established a nonprofit organization the Mad Medics plus 3, Inc.  and established our scholarship fund at that time.

IT'S THEIR DESIRE TO SHARE THEIR LOVE OF MUSIC WITH YOUNGER MUSICIANS THAT HELPS KEEP THIS BAND FOREVER YOUNG.... EVEN IF TWO OF ITS  EIGHT MEMBERS PASSED THEIR  FOUR SCORES OF MUSIC YEARS AGO.
90-YEAR-OLD CHARLIE ENLOW PLAYS TROMBONE AND ED BEBB IS STILL STRUMMING HIS  BANJO AT THE AGE OF 95.

I just feel very fortunate to have worked with the doctors that I have worked with, the musicians I have worked with and I feel very fortunate that I came to Wichita Falls, because I love Wichita Falls.

AND WICHITA FALLS IS FORTUNATE BECAUSE WHEN THINGS ARE NOT GOING QUITE RIGHT,  A DOSE OF THE MAD MEDICS IS  JUST WHAT THE DOCTOR ORDERED.
DOCTOR SAIED HAS MADE MANY OTHER CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE COMMUNITY...JUST TO NAME A FEW...
HE CO-ESTABLISHED THE WICHITA GENERAL NURSING SCHOOL OF ANESTHESIA BACK IN 1969.
HE IS ALSO THE EDITOR OF THE WICHITA FALLS MEDICINE MAGAZINE AND HAS BEEN SINCE ITS INCEPTION IN 1986.
OVER THE YEARS HE'S MADE 11 TRIPS TO MEXICO TO ASSIST UNDERPRIVILEGED PATIENTS.
AND HE STILL MAKES ROUNDS AS AN ANETHESIST AT KELL WEST HOSPITAL.
OWENS AND BRUMLEY FUNERAL HOMES CONGRATULATE DOCTOR SAIED ON THE SPIRIT OF TEXOMA AWARD...
AND IF YOU KNOW SOMEONE WHO TRULY HAS IT NOMINATE THEM NOW.
