Holiday Travel Forecast Released

(NBC News) One thing that may not get carved up like a turkey this Thanksgiving is your wallet, but only if you're planning to travel by car.

A gallon of regular gas is currently averaging about $3.21 a gallon.

That's 20-cents lower than last thanksgiving and the lowest in three years.

AAA is projecting all travel will be actually down this year because the economy still isn't where it was.

"Things such as the unemployment rate and housing market have, indeed, improved but not enough to change people's travel intentions," said AAA CEO Marshall Doney.

The auto club is predicting just under 44-million Americans will mostly drive for Thanksgiving this year with the economics of going by car always in the forefront.

"I tend to do a lot of planning in advance. I go online and research, research everything from restaurants, lodging to activities," traveler Corlyn Altier said.

AAA is also predicting a drop in air travel again because of the costs.

And, like in years past, more than a third of all travelers will leave for their trip next Wednesday with an equal number returning the following Sunday.
