Well there was no doubt that June was hot and dry, but how extreme was it compared to years past? As it turns out, it was a very unique month. First, we were uncharacteristically dry. Wichita Falls only received 0.02 inches of rain. On average, Wichita Falls is supposed to receive 3.69 inches for the month of June. As a result, June 2011 was the 3rd driest June on record and fell 0.01 inches short of the all time records set back in 1902 and 2001. June was also extremely hot. 28/30 days we were at 100 or higher and 6 records were set in June. Before this past month, the all time average high temperature was 101 set back in 1953. June 2011's average high temperature shattered the 1953 record by 3 leaving June 2011 as the hottest June on record! The 104 average high temperature also put June 2011 in the top ten hottest months of all time for Wichita Falls. July is looking to be a very hot month as well. Of course we will be tracking the heat, but you can too with our Heat Wave Counter! Simply go to Texomashomepage.com and click on weather. It will be at the top of the page.
