One Bowie High School senior is dead following a drowning Thursday morning at Mose Johnson Lake next to the school.
Officials with the Texas Department of Public Safety said the victim was Trent Walker, 18.
Walker was very active in the agriculture community, even participating in FFA at Bowie High School.
Authorities say two students were fishing around 11 a.m. when one tried to swim across the lake to get a canoe.
“While he was swimming out he got hung up in some moss,” DPS Sergeant Dan Buesing said. “His friends said he heard him scream for some help and he went in after him, to try and help out, and he also was caught up in the moss as well and couldn’t get any further.”
The second student was not injured, and dive teams were able to retrieve the body.
“The Wichita Falls Police Department responded to the scene and had a couple of their divers come in and they were able to retrieve the victim,” Buesing said.
The Justice of the Peace pronounced the victim dead on the scene at 3:28 p.m.
Montague County Sherrif’s officials, Bowie Police, DPS and officials with Texas Parks and Wildlife were also on the scene.
The body was sent to Dallas for an autopsy.
Bowie High School will be having a prayer vigil Friday. at 7:15 am at Bowie High School Pavilion. there will also be an assembly at 8:15am for the students.
