The Cobra Kai Flight Academy out of Kickapoo airport will be expanding.

At Tuesday’s city council meeting, councilors approved a $140,000 no interest, forgivable loan for the purchase of a flight simulator from 4A Sales Tax.

Cobra Kai will additionally invest $484,000 for additional hangar space, airplanes and flight simulator.

Cobra Kai also expects to employ an additional five employees over a five year period, adding to it’s current eight employees.

Chamber of Commerce CEO Henry Florsheim says these additions will help contribute to the city’s economic growth, but some residents questioned it.

“You’re proposing to spend $142,000 on a flight simulator that maybe 1% of this city will get any use out of this flight simulator,” Anthony Carlisle said.

“We’ve got to put as much emphasis as we can on existing businesses, and in economic development that gets lost. Everybody wants to know who’s the next business coming town and that’s the big story, but we forget about the companies that are already here,” Henry Florsheim, Chamber of Commerce, CEO said.

Florsheim and councilors say the 4A Sales Tax funds are set aside for economic development, and that this investment is worth the return in jobs and benefits to the economy.
