CHICKASHA, Okla. — Two Chickasha men are accused of burglarizing a home and leaving a trail too obvious for authorities to miss.

Police were called to the 1000 block of W. Colorado Ave. in Chickasha to investigate a burglary.

The back door had been kicked in and the owner reported about $4,000 worth of items stolen, including two TVs, a golf bag and clubs, an air condition, and a Presto deep fryer.

It was the fryer that led police straight to their man.

“It was pretty easy to put two and two together,” said neighbor, Matt Kennedy.

According to the arrest affidavit, the officer “observed noticeable grease spots on the concrete on the back porch,” and “grease spots continued west from the reporting party’s back door and continued across the road to the back yard gate of [a house in the 1100 block of] W. Colorado Avenue.”

The trail led police right to the home of Steven McCarthey.

Police say McCarthey consented to a search and they found two TVs and two fishing poles under a “child’s bed,” the air conditioner in a “child’s closet,” a camera in a “baby’s crib” and the deep fryer “in the utility room above the dryer.”

“I saw the trail and could tell what happened,” said Kennedy.

Kennedy says he couldn’t believe McCarthey had done this.

“Steve, the guy that lives here, he’s a great guy. He’s a great character, he’s a family man, so it’s just a little unexpected,” said Kennedy.

Ironically, the victim herself, tells us she’s friends with McCarthey.

She says McCarthey returned their property and she says she will remain friends with him.

Both McCarthey and his alleged accomplice, William Bitsche, have bonded out of the Grady County Jail.

Also in the probable cause affidavit, McCarthey told police “he knew it was wrong, but he was intoxicated on alcohol and broke into the residence anyway.”

He told police he was sorry.

McCarthey and Bitsche admitted to breaking in and stealing the property.
