36th annual Goat BBQ gets underway

Local News

Even though some bad weather may be on the way, there are still teams getting ready for the 36th annual Goat BBQ.

Electra resident Jerry Doss has been going to the Goat BBQ for many years.

“Ever since the first event to be quite honest with you,” Doss said. “Off and on throughout the years. There have been a couple years I have missed but for the most part, I have been to every one of them.
Cooked at several of them behind the scenes and as part of teams. Just coming out here and having a good time.”

The annual BBQ usually brings quite a crowd to Electra.

“It helps out the local economy cause people come in and spend a little money at the stores or whatever,” Board Member Matthew McAlister. “And even the cooks they forget something, they will run down to the store and get what they need, so it helps the local economy.”

This year, the crowd may be smaller than the organizers would like to see.

“The weather is going to hurt us this year,” McAlister said. “They are talking about severe weather tonight or in the morning. In 2015 we had a really bad storm. It blew tables and chairs. I mean it was bad. It blew campers over since then people see a chance of thunderstorms and they say no we don’t want to bring our campers up here, so weather is going to hurt our attendance.”

It’s the friendly competition that keeps this event going strong.

“Fellowship. Just seeing old friends,” Doss said. “A lot of them set up in different camps. The fun of getting together smoking, seeing who has the best smoke going on. The best product coming out of these grills. It’s a lot of fun.”

Rain or shine the goat BBQ will go on and continue to cook up a tradition for many more years.
