Bowie city council votes down community room

Local News

In Bowie, city employees will not be moving into the old Legend Bank building behind City Hall any time soon after all.

Bowie City Manager Bert Cunningham said during remodeling they ran into problems they did not anticipate that were more expensive than they’d expected. He said he presented a proposal for an architect to councilors on Monday, which was voted down. Cunningham hopes the completion of the new city office building will be in next year’s budget and then the current city building will be able to be used by only the police department.

“The police department is in desperate need of space,” Cunningham said. “We need to vacate this building so that they can have this building for space. They don’t have any storage areas. They don’t have any storage areas that are secure for evidence and things like that.”

Cunningham said this is an item that could be brought up again next year if city officials are able to work it into their budget.
