This weekend will be all about dogs and cats.
Hundreds are waiting for people to take them home Saturday for Clear the Shelters.
Thousands of pets are adopted each year through this great initiative created by pet lovers and animal rescues around the nation.
In Texoma, there are nine shelters participating in this national event, including the Wichita County Humane Society.
The humane society is hoping to see more people this year by offering something very special.
“Well we’re going to waive the fee, so we’re going to take donation only, so whatever you feel generous enough to give, to donate and whatever you think that animal is worth, we’ll be happy to take that,” Wichita County Humane Society Director Cheryl Miller said.
The humane society currently has 58 dogs, but it’s their cat house that really needs help. Typically they shelter 25 cats, but this year, they have 27.
“We’ve taken in quite a few this summer, kittens especially, and some have actually grown up here and so we hoping to have a good number of cats adopted,” Miller said.
The Clear the Shelters event is Saturday, Aug. 18 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. to see a full map of which shelters are participating click here.
