Fundraising efforts are underway for the family of Savannah Sherwood, 10, who died in a car crash Friday night off near Lake Arrowhead when the car she was riding in hit a coyote and rolled.
Doug Gaskey has been pastor at Henrietta’s Grace Temple Baptist Church for 12 years.
“God calls and you go and do what God tells you to do,” Gaskey said. Throughout his time in ministry, Gaskey explained there are highs and lows. ” [I] can’t think of anything else I would do at this point with my life,” Gaskey said.
A heartbreaking moment came just recently when Gaskey got a call about one of his congregants.
According to authorities, Savannah Sherwood, who had just turned 10, was killed in an accident near Lake Arrowhead on FM 2606, when the vehicle she was riding in hit a coyote and rolled.
Once he got the call, Pastor Gaskey said there was only one thing to do.
“Get out of the chair and get in the car and get over to the home with the family.”
After speaking to the family, Gaskey learned they wouldn’t be able to cover all funeral costs. So, Gaskey, his wife, and others decided to put a fundraiser together, ministering to Sherwood’s family.
“We could involve the whole community in. We could involve our church in. They come in, grab an envelope, put that amount of money in here,” Gaskey said.
The goal is to reach $10,000.
Gaskey said although she was young, the example Sherwood leaves behind is beyond her years.
“To me, a very clear picture of what Jesus Christ told us in scripture when Jesus said: ‘You are my disciple if you love each other as I have loved you.'”
Funeral arrangements for Gaskey are still pending. A prayer vigil is set for 6 p.m. Monday night at Henrietta Elementary.
