Local News
NBC 5 News- Kipenzi, which means “loved one” in Swahili, is the name of the Dallas Zoo’s newest baby giraffe.

The zoo announced the name of Katie the giraffe’s calf after a week of voting by the public.

The giraffe calf came into the world on April 10 as millions watched on smart phones and tablets.

Katie’s keepers chose three Swahili names, for the public to vote on — all with meanings that honor the thousands of name requests:
Adia – “a gift”
Kanzi – “a treasure”
Kipenzi – “loved one”

The calf came weighed in at birth at 139 pounds and stood 5 feet, 10 inches tall.

Viewers cheered Katie on as she pushed for nearly an hour to deliver the calf, and over the next hours as the wobbly little one tried to stand, took her first steps and began nursing.
