Farmers hopeful for peach crop despite late freeze

Local News

With the strawberries just about to plump up, the outlook for Charlie peaches this year is a little unclear.

They have had very bad luck in the last several years, and this year’s crop so far looks okay, but growers will not know for sure for another week or so to see if the seeds are developing.

A late freeze a few weeks ago could still hamper the fruit, but they are hopeful they will have lots of peaches for the farmers market and at the orchards, unlike last year.

“They froze and had real good crop and bad hail storm that completely wiped them out,” Morath Orchard co-owner Jimmy Morath said. “There is nothing you can really do with the weather”

Morath said the trees have been blooming for two weeks now and that the peaches should be ready in June and July.
