Former Wichita Co. employee sentenced to probation in embezzlement scheme

A former employee of the Wichita County auditor’s office is sentenced to probation for an embezzlement scheme of a storage business.

Jessica Payne Winkler of Iowa Park received 10 years probation from Judge Charles Barnard Thursday morning.

Winkler and Mark Alden Lancaster of Henrietta were charged last May with theft over $30,000.

Winkler was terminated shortly after her arrest.

According to the investigators, a report of embezzlement was filed in January by a manager of Saf-T-Loc on Seymour Highway who said two employees had been stealing money from the accounts.

The complaint stated Lancaster was the manager and had been employed since 2015, and an audit showed he was making transactions on the business account, including writing checks to himself and withdrawing cash.

The affidavit states he was also writing unauthorized checks to Winkler, who was a part-time employee of Saf-T-Loc.

Police officers said Lancaster told them he and Winkler had a romantic interest and he began writing checks to her when she asked him for money. They say Winkler told them she needed money to pay off a loan and admitted she knew of Winkler’s romantic interest and knew he would keep writing her checks if she asked.

Total amount of the stolen funds was placed at almost $58,000, and officers said of that amount, Winkler got more than $30,000 in checks.
