A fundraiser has been set up to help Oklahoma Highway Patrol Officer Gary Sanders as he recovers from injuries suffered after a serious accident that happened on Thursday.

Lieutenant John Vincent with the Oklahoma Highway Patrol says Sanders’ patrol unit was hit by a truck during a traffic stop on Southbound 183 near Davidson.

Authorities say after he collected the driver’s license, Trooper Sanders returned to his patrol car.

They say Sanders was sitting in his car when a tan pick-up rammed into his car from behind, shoving him into the back end of the red truck he pulled over.

Friends of Sanders tell us he has broken vertebrae in his back, his kidneys have shut down, he has a fractured pelvis, a cut on his liver, and several broken ribs.

He underwent surgery Tuesday morning.

Friends and family are now selling t-shirts to help with medical expenses.

The campaign says it hopes to bring awarness to left-lane passing laws that requires drivers to slow down to 20 miles per hour when passing a law enforcement vehicle.
