Funeral service set for former 28-year WFPD officer

Local News

Funeral services are set for a former Wichita Falls police officer who passed away on Saturday.

Lt. John Cummings retired from the WFPD in 2002 after 28-years of service.

Following that, Cummings became an instructor at the Criminal Justice Academy in Vernon.

The 73-year old Cummings is remembered for not just his dedication to the WFPD but also the many lives he touched in the community.

“He was very approachable, he wanted to make sure that as an officer that you were out here doing the right thing and if you needed a question answered,” WFPD Chief  Manuel Borrego said, “He was there for you.”

Borrego credits Cummings for his role in getting the WFPD its national accreditation several years ago.

And, he also played Santa Claus for the kids at the Boys and Girls Clubs.

Visitation is from 6—8 p.m. Tuesday at Owens and Brumley funeral home.

The funeral service with full police honors is set for 10 a.m. on Wednesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
