In Austin, Governor Greg Abbott signed his first bill of the 2017 legislative session into law this morning. “House Bill 89” prohibits state contracts and investments with companies that boycott Israel.

Texas is now the 20th state with such a law, according to the Jewish Telegraphic Agency. The bill passed unanimously in the house last month,  and all but five senators in the upper chamber voted in favor of it.

“Any boycott of Israel is considered to be “untexan,” and Texas is not going to do business with any company that boycotts Israel,” Greg Abbott, Governor of Texas.

This could be the first of many bills the governor will sign. Jim Hensen with the Texas politics project says as of right now there have been about 9500 total pieces of legislation introduced that includes memorial resolutions and items similar to that.
