More than 150 children from across the country gathered to ask lawmakers to renew money for the Special Diabetes Program.

They all have something in common, they were diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes at a young age.

Texas Graham native Claire Jones was diagnosed before her 11th birthday.

“I was ten years old when I was diagnosed she said, with Type 1 Diabetes and I didn’t know what it was”

Claire’s father Steve Jones is a family practitioner and said he has learned more about Type 1 Diabetes through his daughter’s diagnosis.

“I realized how much I didn’t know about Diabetes he said, It’s a lot of work when it comes to monitoring her blood sugar every time she sits down to eat or drink”

Claire and her father both attended the Celebrity Town Hall where JDRF children could ask a celebrity panel questions.

The panel of celebrities included House of Cards actor Paul Sparks and Nickelodeon’s Brec Bassinger from Bella and the Bulldogs.

Claire attended a social where she was able to meet the celebrities in person and share her story with them.

Then it was off to the Senate building for a hearing with senators on getting more funding for diabetes research.

Claire even got the chance to meet with her Congressmen Jodey Arrington.

It’s been five years since Claire has been diagnosed and she says the support she receives, is from the same place she can call home.

“You know my church groups my school groups everybody in Graham has truly taken Diabetes head on with me and pushed through with me so I think they’ve been awesome”
