It’s been a Christmas tradition in Vernon for more than a quarter century and it continued with a hearty meal and hundreds of smiles.
The Holiday Spirit Meals provided meals to residents looking for a place to eat this holiday but that’s not all they were able to do, as the children were able to meet Santa Claus as he stopped in after a long night of delivering presents.
With ham to turkey, mashed potatoes, dressing, black-eyed peas and so much more. Vernon’s holiday spirit meals once again delivered. Something organizers have been doing since 1987.
“I think they are just as thankful for us as we are of them. It takes a whole lot of people to make this happen and it takes just as many people that we need to serve for it to happen,” Goins said.
Jerry Lou Schmoker has volunteered for 30 years and she said people should always help other people.
“We all need to be able to do something to help the other people. And in turn, they help us. There’s several people here right now that they help us with this but then they come back and help us with something else,” Schmoker said.
Sharon Goins and her husband Billy took over the program back in 2016. Sharon said it is always great to see the people that come to grab a meal.
“Making sure people have meals and like Harlan, I don’t know if you saw Harlan earlier, that no one has to eat alone that we are going to be here and we are going to be each other’s families,” Goins said.
A lot of work went into this day, but seeing the kids and families faces makes it all worth it.
For those that were unable to attend, the Holiday Spirit Meals delivered meals to residents as well.
