One restaurant in Lawton made sure a few military families had plenty of food for this Easter weekend.
Operation Homefront partnered with Cracker Barrel to provide the food for military families in Lawton. Both organizations have worked together before but never on this large of a scale.
Elaulas Cristiano knows what it’s like around the holiday’s for military families, so he is glad to be able to give back to those families.
“I’m a veteran myself, so it’s awesome to be able to give back,” Cristiano said. “I can definitely relate to a lot of their struggles. What they are going through. When I am able to do that, I share that feeling with them, so it’s just even better.”
Cracker Barrel officials have worked with Operation Homefront to help out military families in the past but it is usually on a much smaller scale.
“Normally, we would give out four or five meals,” Cracker Barrel General Manager Matt Voeller said. “We would give those out in the community, but this time we kind of went big. We are doing 40 meals, the holiday meals for families of the army,” Voeller said. “This year the Cracker Barrel home office went ahead and picked all the families, so they took care of that end for us.”
They are being given is plenty of food for the family.
“The box is going to contain some bread. It’s got four sides. This year it’s mashed potatoes and gravy, carrots, green beans and macaroni and cheese,” Voeller said. “It’s got a small gift for them. Comes with a spiral cut ham and two pies.”
Putting this many meals together is a lot of work, but both Voeller and Cristiano said it’s worth it in the end.
“Once you get it together, the thank yous and the handshakes are definitely, definitely worth it,” Voeller said.
“It’s awesome, absolutely awesome,” Cristiano said. “They are so grateful. They are so appreciative of everything. What we do as an organization and cracker barrel’s generosity. It’s such an awesome thing to be able to give back to those that have served us.”
They’re happy they can work together to make sure the families of those who serve our country have a special meal this holiday weekend.
The food they are given will serve about 10 people and that gift the families get with all that food are salt and pepper shakers from Cracker Barrel.
