Local Teachers Lobby in Austin with Concerns About Education Bills

Local News

A group of Texomans are on their way to Austin for Lobby Day, ready to voice their concerns about certain bills concerning the state education system.

Texoma representatives from the American Federation of Teachers, other teachers, students and citizens will voice their concerns about two senate bills and the District of Innovation Concept.

They plan to speak about Senate Bill 13 and House Bill 510 which would cease automatic payroll deductions for union dues. And, the group will touch on Senate Bill 3 which would give vouchers or tax credit scholarships to students to help pay the cost of private tuition.

“If you do the numbers, most of the teachers’ pay check goes to funding their own classrooms because there’s not enough supplies because they have already taken money out. And so if you’re going to take away our payroll deductions and then you’re going to go on a voucher system, how much more money are we going to have to take out of our paychecks to fund our students?” Melissa Echols, Burkburnett High School Special Ed Teacher.

They plan on speaking with Representative James Frank and Senator Craig Estes on these topics.
