Lost dog shows true spirit of Texas

Local News

Otis is just an old dog from small town Sinton, Texas. His fighting spirit and ability to adapt after Hurricane Harvey has gone viral.

“My grandson told me, grandpa, make sure you take care of Otis,” Otis’ Owner Salvador Segovia said.

Harvey produced up to 70-mile-per-hour winds and, yes, it could have killed an elderly dog like Otis. Instead, it set the scene for a picture worth a thousand words.

“He just looked so uplifted by having that bag of food, it was just precious, it was like the cutest thing I’ve ever seen,” Tiele Dockens, who took the photos of Otis, said.

“To my surprise here comes Otis, with a bag of dog food in his mouth, a full five-pound bag of dog food in his mouth, like I’m home and I got me some provisions here,” Segovia said.

“He just looked so uplifted by having that bag of food, just precious,” Dockens said. “It was like the cutest thing I’d ever seen.”

That snapshot has been shared worldwide.

“I’ve had messages from Japan and Brazil and India, and Germany, Russia everywhere,” Dockens said.

People from all walks of life seem to identify with this simple concept that contains a valuable lesson.

“I think Otis makes a point telling the people in Texas we will survive,” Segovia said.

“On top of surviving, we wanna thrive and I think that just brings so much inspiration and peace,” Dockens said. “Otis can do it, we can all do it, we can make it through we can come together and just be a part of the bigger picture.”

The bigger picture: finding the means to go on despite any and every hardship, that is the true power and meaning of the Texan spirit.

“If a dog like Otis can do it, humanity can do it too,” Segovia said.
