Man, 75, awaits appeal for charge of indecency with child

Local News

A former Texoma catholic clergyman has been transferred from state prison back to Wichita County jail for assignment of his appellate attorney to handle an appeal of his sentence for sexual indecency with a child by sexual contact.

Russell Detwiler, 75, of Wichita Falls, was given a five-year sentence by 78th District Judge Barney Fudge last October.

He waived his right to trial and made an open plea to the charge.

A licensed therapist notified authorities after the 14-year-old girl talked about the sexual abuse she suffered several years earlier in Wichita and Clay Counties when she was 9- or 10-years-old.

She said she was abused on multiple occasions at Detwiler’s home in Wichita Falls and in Clay County.

Detwiler is also back for a motion to revoke his probation on the earlier Clay County conviction.

He received an eight-year probated sentence in June.

Detwiler served as a deacon for parishes in Wichita Falls, Montague, Henrietta, Bowie, and Nocona according to the Dallas Diocese.
