A memorial celebration for a man police say came to the aid of a woman and was killed by the attacker will take place Saturday afternoon.

William Stephens, 64, known by friends and family as “wild bill” died of severe brain injury several days after he was hit with a board.

The man police say hit him, William Starnes, 46 — is charged with murder.

Family members say Stephens is from Wisconsin, and came to Wichita Falls while he was in the Air Force. They say after growing up in Wisconsin, he enjoyed the warm weather in Wichita Falls and decided to make it his home the last 45 years.

Family members say Stephens never met a stranger and had a huge heart. Friends are putting on the memorial celebration at Scotland Park at 2 p.m. Saturday.
