Olney VFD family supports two of their own after cancer diagnoses

Local News

A Texoma volunteer fire department family is appealing to the community and surrounding areas to support two of their very own.

Being married to an Olney volunteer firefighter comes with a second family for Julie Lane, and when some of those family members needed help, she jumped into action.

“When two of our own were diagnosed with cancer, it was a no-brainer: we’re gonna come together and we’re gonna do something,” event coordinator Julie Lane said. “They are always the first two to jump in and take charge,”

Lane is spearheading a dinner and dance benefit to help her close friends, one of which is Olney Volunteer Fire Chief Ron Keeter who is battling pancreatic and liver cancer.

“He called me up personally to tell me himself, I was very shocked,” firefighter and close friend Kenley Lane said.

If the news could not have gotten any worst, the assistant fire chief’s daughter Misti Ickert Ondricek was diagnosed with stomach cancer.

Both were given the news in early May.

It has been about three weeks since Keeter has been in the firehouse, has worn and his gear and while the tone of the firehouse has shifted, he still has the firefighter strength and spirit.

While both members of the Olney Fire Department family battle their illnesses the community has decided to raise funds to support them.

“When people are down love speaks volume and we really just want to pack the room that evening and hopefully sell out,” Julie Lane said.

“We are one big family and we know all of them and it takes a toll on all of us,” Kenley Lane said.

While they fight for their lives, their community plans to stand behind them through it all.

The event is set to take place at the HDH Pavilion in Olney on June 29.
