Many people the Labor Day weekend as a chance to spend the time with their families and some traveled a ways to do that.
“I’m from Tulsa down here visiting my brother who is a first-year teacher here in Wichita Falls and just having a great time.”
“Came out to this great park and seeing the falls. We are actually from Kentucky so we are here visiting our son and checking out what Wichita Falls has to offer.”
“I think we are going to go to my dad’s. Have a few drinks and just barbecue be with family and like always eat food.”
“Usually just barbecue. That’s what I’ve done in the past with my family.”
But not everyone we spoke with is sure why Labor Day was created.
“I’ll be honest, I actually don’t. I actually don’t.”
“No, not at all.”
“It’s to celebrate the American working spirit.”
“It’s basically for the working people. Kind of like to look back on everything they have done for the country, for themselves and for their community.”
The first Labor Day was held in 1882 and was organized by labor unions in New York and became a federal holiday in 1894. Regardless of whether people know the history of the holiday, they do know they are happy to have labor day off.
