From crazy upsets to game-winning shots, there’s only one way to describe the NCAA men’s basketball tournament: madness. Players aren’t the only ones feeling the madness, though.
The March Madness tournament is huge for sports bars across the nation. In fact, according to Business Insider, a lot of the national chains receive an uptick in stock shares over that period as well. Parkway Grill waitress Bailee Russell said this year has been different than years past.
“We’ve actually had over the last three-four weeks record-breaking numbers here,” Russell said. “It’s not only busy just on Thursday, Friday, Saturday, it’s busy every night of the week.”
Russell said she believes what has contributed to those record-setting numbers is the Texas Tech Red Raiders making it further than they ever have.
“I will say, Saturday night especially, every single person in the bar I think was in Tech gear,” Russell said. “The turnout, because it’s a Texas team going that far, has been very incredible especially for a local business. We are used to seeing the big crowds here but I’ve never seen anything like this before.”
Red Raider fan Derek Knowles showed up to get a spot more than two hours before tip-off in fear of not getting a seat.
“Always want to make sure I have a place at Parkway Grill,” Knowles said. “Everybody loves to come here. The food is good, a great atmosphere, and want to come and root Texas Tech on to a victory I hope tonight.”
It may have been crazy several weeks to work at these places, but Russell said she feels it is all well worth it in the end.
