Two people accused of abducting Burkburnett child arraigned

Local News

Two people accused of abducting a Burkburnett toddler last week were arraigned Monday afternoon in New Mexico.

Michael Smith, 48, and Robin Golden, 51, are charged with felony aggravated assault with a motor vehicle and felony hit-and-run in connection with the abduction of Eli Smith, 2.

Burkburnett police were called to an RV Park on East Third Street after a reported hit-and-run accident involving a pedestrian on Nov. 20.

Police officers said the grandmother of Eli Smith was run down by Smith and Golden as they tried to take the boy from the home.

The grandmother was flown to United Regional where she is listed now in fair condition.

Investigators later discovered that there’s an impending legal battle over the custody of a two-year-old child between the child’s mother and Michael Smith.

Officers said \Smith drove from California to Texas with Golden to take the child.

Burkburnett PD then issued out an Amber Alert, and after about five hours they were found in Santa Rosa, New Mexico.

The child was unharmed.
