Two Wichitans honored by Boy Scouts with Americanism award

WICHITA FALLS (KFDX/KJTL) - Two men are being honored by the Boy Scouts of America Northwest Texas Council with something very special.

Charles Gibson and Reno Gustafson were awarded the 2018 Americanism award during a luncheon Thursday afternoon.

Americanism events were established to honor individuals who have taken the scout oath and law into their adult lives.

Both men have exhibited the ideals and values of being an American.

The Boy Scouts of America prepares our youth to become responsible, participating citizens and leaders guided by the scout oath and law.

These are just some of the qualities exemplified by Charles Gibson and Reno Gustafson that have made them the ideal recipients of the Americanism award.

"Scouting taught me that it was important to give back to the community. Gustafson said. "So over the past 42 years, I've tried to be a voice for Midwestern State University, Art community and Sheppard Air Force Base."

Gibson emphasizes the importance of being a good role model."It teaches values like trustworthy, loyal, helpful friendly it talks about duty to God and country and if everybody work that way then we wouldn't have problems," Gibson said. "To see my kids learn the way to be good citizens and to be helpful members of society is what every parent wants."

Gustafson believes that through his foundation gained from scouting, he has been able to get things done in the community.

"Scouting also taught me the basics of being honest and always telling the truth and when you do those things people believe in you and you can get things accomplished," Gustafson said.

Keynote speaker, Kent Hance, who is a former state senator and US congressman, talks about one important aspect of scouting.

"To have self-respect and give people respect and civility in a time in our nation where people are not really nice to each other," Kent Hance said.

Current scouts are being encouraged to enjoy the journey and soak in the lessons.
