Wichita Falls ISD is starting a new program to make sure kids are getting a hot meal even though the end of the school day has come and gone. The great thing about this food program is there is no registration involved, and it’s not just limited to the kids.
Wichita Falls ISD is going into their first year of offering free food for kids 18 and under. But if you are a parent or someone over 18, you will still be able to eat for just $3.80.
Marketing Specialist for Chartswell K-12 Marci Spruiell said this was something that needed to happen.
“Our biggest priority is the kids when it comes to the child nutrition department. We want to feed them and we know that there’s a need for it in our community. So, we want to make sure that we give that availability to them to be able to come in and not just eat breakfast or lunch but also eat supper,” Spruiell said.
Carrie Richardson is the chef and said the menu never stays the same.
“We have a two-week menu rotation. On that menu rotation we have things like meatball sub with baked fries, blackened fish tacos with tilapia, we have chicken wings with buffalo sauce baked fries, chicken spaghetti with a salad,” Richardson said.
All of the meals are run by their nutritionist to make sure the students are getting the nutrients they need. But with the start of this program, Spruiell said she has one goal.
“To feed as many people as possible. We want this to be a normal spot for families to come to eat meals in a safe environment. We know that there are really busy people out there. For me as a mom, I know that between soccer, and wrestling, and school, and homework this gives me another option where I don’t have to cook dinner,” Spruiell said.
Spruiell also wants to emphasize that these meals are not just for the needy but for anyone that wants to come out and have an affordable great meal.
The meals will be served Monday through Friday and will be offered at various locations.
- Burgess Elementary and Hirschi High School are the first two locations and will open Aug. 23. Burgess will be serving meals 4—5:30 p.m. while Hirschi will serve meals from 3—5:30 p.m.
- Kirby Middle School will open Aug. 27 and serve meals 3:15-5:15 p.m.
