Wichita Falls police say a man stole a Silverado pickup then took off running after he caused it to catch fire while trying to start it with the help of a good Samaritan who came to assist him.

Robert Seitz Junior, 29, is charged with theft over $2,500.

Officers responded to reports of a truck on fire in the 3300 block of Lafayette on Tuesday.

The fire was put out by the resident before firefighters arrived.

Police spoke to the witness who told them he heard someone trying to start a truck outside his house so he went to help.

He said he found a man with tattoos all over his body and brought him a gas can.

He also said the man was acting very nervous and asked him not to call police.

Then he said the man began pouring gas in the engine area, and a small fire started, at that time, the man took off his shirt and sweatshirt and began fanning the flames with them.

When the fire got out of control, the witness said the man took off running.

Another officer in the area spotted a man covered with tattoos running two blocks away and he detained him. He said the man was carrying a shirt with burn marks on it with the odor of gasoline.

Officers said both the door lock and the ignition on the 2000 Silverado had been punched and the ignition was lying on the floorboard.
