Dateline NBC is highlighting a cold case that was solved thanks to the help of a Wichita Falls psychologist.
Brittani Marcell was brutally beaten by a shovel at her home in Albuquerque, N.M. back in 2008. The attack left her blind in one eye, deaf in one ear, and relearning how to walk and talk. After the attack, Marcell had no memory of what happened and Dr. Leon Morris was brought in to assist.
“I saw her for hypnosis. To open the door to her memory. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t. If the memory loss is caused by brain damage, and she had some brain damage, it’s not retrievable. But if it’s caused by trauma and it’s repressed then we usually have access to it,” Dr. Morris said.
Thankfully her memory was repressed and she was able to remember details from that day. Dr. Leon Morris says he is thankful to have been a part of the suspects’ capture.
“I was happy to have a role in it. The truth is Jodi Gonterman, the detective, had the main role in it. She did a beautiful job of going after this guy,” Dr. Morris said.
In July, Justice Hansen was sentenced to the maximum penalty of 18 years in prison.
The Dateline NBC episode, titled “The Match”, will air Friday at 7 p.m., on KFDX.
