A thirty-year-old Wichita Falls mother is jailed on an injury to a child charge after police say her 7-month baby was severely burned by scalding water in an infant wash tub.

Jessica Guadalupe Brashear was booked into Wichita County Jail Saturday morning for the incident on June 29th. Police were called to United Regional emergency room about the infant that was brought in by ambulance.

The baby girl was later flown to the Parkland burn unit in Dallas where she is being treated for 2nd-degree burns to 17 percent of her body. Doctors say she suffered suspicious burns, blisters and peeled skin to the backs of her legs, buttocks, feet and ankles.

Police say Brashear told them the baby had soiled her diaper so she took her to the bathroom and turned on the hot and cold faucets and filled the baby tub and put the baby in it without ever checking the temperature.

She said after a few seconds she said the baby made noises and she realized the water was too hot., however, police reported she told doctors the baby was in the water 1 to 2 minutes.

Officers say Brashear called the baby’s father at work and told him she was on her way to the emergency room and it was an accident. They say both Brashear and the father told them the water in the bathroom had always been extremely hot and was instantly hot almost as soon as it was turned on.

Police say the thermostat on the water heater was at the maximum 150-degree setting.
