Fire Destroys A High Rise Apartment Building In London

National News

A massive fire has completely engulfed a 24-story apartment building in London.

It started Tuesday night– with flames burning through almost every window in the building.

Early Wednesday morning there was a thick cloud of black smoke billowing from the high rise.

The London Fire Brigade is reporting multiple people have died in the fire.

“London ambulance service have confirmed that currently, 30, three-zero, people have been taken to 5 hospitals. At this time I am very sad to confirm that there have been a number of fatalities. I can not confirm the number at this time due to the size and complexity of this building” says Commissioner of the London Brigade, Dany Cotton.

The Commissioner says in her 29 years of being a firefighter she has never seen anything of this scale.

Witnesses say they saw people jumping from the building and residents say there was no indication the structure was on fire.

“If I fell asleep I would have been dead, that’s how bad it was. 100 percent. There weren’t no water, there weren’t no proper noise to let us know nothing was happening, you know what I mean, it was frightening” says one apartment resident.

One witness says within 15 minutes the whole right side of the building was on fire and within an hour the entire building was engulfed.

Officials say the building was built in the 70’s and had been undergoing major refurbishment.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
